At least 14 people were killed after flash floods swept through North Sulawesi, Indonesia, an official reported on Tuesday, as rescue teams continued searching for the missing.
Heavy rains early Monday triggered the floods on the island of Siau, part of the Siau Tagulandang Biaro region, according to Nuriadin Gumeleng, spokesperson for the local rescue agency.
Sixteen rescuers are currently searching for four people who remain missing, Gumeleng added, noting that 18 others have been injured.
At least 444 people have been evacuated to local schools and churches after the flash floods, the country disaster mitigation agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said in a statement.
Indonesia’s meteorological agency has warned that the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua are likely to face peak wet-season conditions in January and February, heightening the risk of flooding.
