Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has become the world’s first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) to achieve water positivity across its entire operational portfolio, which exceeds 14 GW in capacity.

AGEL reached this milestone a full year ahead of its FY26 target, setting a new global benchmark for sustainability. It is also the first and only company among the world’s top 10 renewable energy players (by operational capacity) to be certified water positive.

According to a company statement, AGEL received water-positive certification from global assurance firm Intertek, following rigorous audits and assessments of water accounting data across 103 operational and 85 water conservation sites. It is currently the only renewable energy firm of its scale in India to hold this distinction.

Being water positive involves implementing practices that not only conserve water but also replenish it, returning more freshwater to the environment than is consumed during operations. AGEL’s solar and wind projects, many of which are located in water-scarce regions like Khavda in Gujarat and the Thar Desert, demonstrate the viability of sustainable innovation in harsh climates.

AGEL’s water conservation efforts are equivalent to approximately 467 Olympic-sized swimming pools, enough to meet the biannual water needs of Lakshadweep. The revitalization of 85 ponds has benefited over 123,000 people in nearby communities. Additionally, 54% of AGEL’s solar capacity uses robotic cleaning systems, saving around 546 million litres of water annually.

The company initially set out to make 200 MW of its operations water positive by FY23. After exceeding that target, AGEL expanded the goal to cover its entire portfolio by FY26, achieving it a year early.

“This isn’t just corporate success; it’s a sustainability revolution,” said an AGEL spokesperson. “We don’t just generate green energy—we build it the greenest way possible. Climate change will intensify global water stress, and India, with low per capita freshwater and high utilisation levels, must lead with solutions like these.”

AGEL’s operations are now certified water positive, single-use plastic free, and zero waste-to-landfill—solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable development. The company’s efforts underscore the importance of water conservation in the face of growing global pressures on water resources from climate change, population growth, and pollution.-IANS
