Kospi Hits Record High, Soars Almost 3% On Samsung SK Hynix Gains

The Kospi index of South Korea increased by almost 3 percent to reach an all-time high, boosted by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which are heavyweights.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares increased by 3.49 percent and 9.86 percent, respectively, after declaring a partnership with OpenAI late on Wednesday to provide memory chips. In the meantime, the Kosdaq gained 1.05 percent, to end at 854.25.

The consumer price index of South Korea rose by 2.1 percent on a year basis in September, exceeding the expected growth of 2 percent as projected by the economists in a Reuters poll.

The most recent reading is in line with 1.7 percent growth in August. The standard index of Japan’s market, Nikkei 225, increased 0.87 percent to close the day at 44,936.73, and Topix decreased 0.24 percent to 3,087.4.

The ASX/S&P 200 in Australia shot up by 1.13 percent to 8,945.9. The Hang Seng Index of Hong Kong improved 1.61 per cent to reach 27,287.12.

Shares of Zijin Gold skyrocketed more than 14 percent to close at 137.5 Hong Kong dollars, on the heels of two days of gains since its entrance into trading on Tuesday. The Hang Seng Tech index shot up 3.36 percent to 6,682.86.

Therefore, Chinese and Indian markets remain closed for holidays.

The S&P 500 achieved a new high on Wednesday in the United States, prompting the U.S. equity futures to ease marginally in the early Asian hours with traders betting that the U.S. government shutdown would not last long.

The shutdown will take at least three days, and the Senate will be out of the session on Thursday stateside on account of Yom Kippur, but traders are betting the shutdown can run even longer, almost two weeks.

The general market index was 0.34 percent higher to close at 6,711.20 overnight. It previously reached a new record intra-day high. The Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.42 percent to close at 22,755.16, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average trading by 43.21 points, or 0.09 percent, to close at 46,441.10.
