The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has helped finance a major strategic project to provide the city of Kiffa and surrounding areas in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania with safe drinking water.

The initiative is one of the largest projects aimed at enhancing water security and meeting rising demand in the Assaba and Guidimaka regions.

The project was inaugurated in the town of Touimirt Iflane, south of Kiffa, in the presence of Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of Mauritania. It involves transferring water from the Senegal River to supply dozens of cities and villages with potable water.

Valued at more than US$300 million, the project is among Mauritania’s most significant water supply initiatives. In its initial phase, it is expected to deliver clean water to over 180,000 people, with plans to gradually expand services to reach up to 500,000 beneficiaries by 2050.

The project includes the development of production and treatment facilities with a capacity of up to 50,000 cubic metres per day, designed to allow future expansion. It also involves the construction of a transmission and distribution network extending more than 780 kilometres to supply towns and villages along the route.

“This project represents a strategic investment in addressing water scarcity, one of the region’s most critical development challenges,” Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, ADFD Director-General, said. “Through this financing, the Fund is enabling long-term, sustainable water solutions that strengthen resilience, enhance quality of life, and support Mauritania’s economic and social development.”

The project, he said, underscores ADFD’s commitment to building impactful development partnerships that expand access to essential services, in alignment with the UAE’s development vision and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Al Suwaidi added that ADFD’s partnership with Mauritania, which began in 1977, has supported the financing of several strategic infrastructure and essential services projects. He reaffirmed the Fund’s continued commitment to backing initiatives that add value to Mauritania’s economy and promote social well-being.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with multiple Arab, Islamic, and international development funds, as part of a joint effort to finance and deliver one of Mauritania’s largest water projects, supporting national efforts to ensure access to safe water across the targeted regions.
