Abu Dhabi has imposed a strict ban on cryptocurrency mining on agricultural land, with authorities confirming that violators will face fines of Dh100,000, a penalty that doubles for repeat offenses.

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (Adafsa) announced the decision after detecting several cases of farms being used for crypto mining operations. The authority said it would suspend all services and support for non-compliant farms, including electricity disconnections and the confiscation of mining equipment.

The new measure marks a sharp escalation in penalties compared to 2024, when fines for such violations were capped at Dh10,000, resulting in a 900 per cent increase this year.

Adafsa confirmed that violations will be issued to both farm owners and tenants, citing the negative impact of crypto mining on agricultural sustainability and biosecurity.

Any farm found engaging in activities outside approved agricultural and livestock economic uses will face strict action, the authority reiterated, stressing that safeguarding food security and resource sustainability remains a top priority.

In addition to fines and service suspensions, offenders will be referred to the relevant authorities for further legal proceedings under applicable legislation.

Adafsa has once again urged all farm owners and agricultural workers to refrain from using farms for non-agricultural purposes, warning that violations threaten not only food production but also the broader environmental and biosecurity framework.
