The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), in partnership with TAQA Distribution, has launched “Barq,” an initiative aimed at operating an ultra-fast and highly reliable electric vehicle (EV) charging network that delivers an enhanced, value-added experience for users.

The initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s efforts to build a sustainable mobility ecosystem supported by advanced infrastructure, contributing to environmental sustainability and an improved quality of life.

The project includes the installation of more than 50 chargers, each with a capacity of 360 kW, at key locations across the emirate. These include Manarat Al Saadiyat, Mina Market, Burjeel Hospital in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, and several sites in Al Ain such as UAE University, Tawam Hospital, Al Jimi Mall, as well as City Mall in Madinat Zayed in Al Dhafra.

The charging stations can deliver approximately 100 kilometres of range in about three minutes, offering fast and dependable charging. Customers will also benefit from a free charge after every three charging sessions.

The first phase of the charging network is scheduled to become operational on 13 January 2026, coinciding with Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Visitors will be able to use the charging service free of charge throughout the event week.

“Barq represents a strategic step in Abu Dhabi’s sustainable mobility journey, providing an advanced charging network that combines speed and reliability to meet the needs of individuals and institutions,” said Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the DoE. “Additionally, the project reflects our strong commitment to cement our leadership position in sustainable energy, while advancing environmental sustainability and delivering real value to society.

He noted that the initiative demonstrates the DoE’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 and highlights the importance of strategic partnerships with entities such as TAQA Distribution to deliver smart, sustainable solutions that enhance quality of life and support sustainable development.

Ahmed Al Rumaithi, DoE Undersecretary, said, “Barq is a leading model designed to deploy the latest technologies in smart energy infrastructure. The advanced charging ecosystem delivers high operational efficiency and reliability, ensuring service continuity as per the highest standards.”

He added that the system integrates advanced technical solutions with improved energy management to deliver a seamless user experience and optimal operations. The project also supports the transition to sustainable mobility and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s innovation journey, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to smart, sustainable solutions that benefit the community and secure a sustainable future.

Omar Al Hashmi, CEO of TAQA Distribution, stated, “The Barq project represents a strategic step within the Abu Dhabi Government’s efforts to reinforce its leadership in sustainable mobility and smart energy, through an advanced charging network that combines technological innovation with high operational efficiency, supporting the emirate’s sustainable development and strengthening its global standing as a hub for innovation and clean energy.”

The project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision to advance sustainable mobility in line with the National Air Quality Agenda 2031 and the UAE National Electric Vehicles Policy, which aims for electric and hybrid vehicles to account for 50 percent of all vehicles by 2050.

By expanding fast, convenient, and innovative charging infrastructure, the DoE and TAQA Distribution, in collaboration with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, are helping to build a reliable, efficient, and sustainable EV charging network. This also supports wider EV adoption and long-term emissions reductions.

The DoE emphasized the importance of engaging proactive and innovative ideas in the development of Barq and invited the public to share feedback via email at barqev@doe.gov.ae.

Members of the public can also download the Barq.EV app from the App Store and Google Play to access features such as real-time network monitoring, station location services, and a seamless charging experience, enhancing community and economic value while supporting Abu Dhabi’s transition toward sustainable mobility.
