ADNOC has signed a 15-year Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IndianOil), India’s largest integrated energy company, for the supply of 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The LNG will be sourced primarily from ADNOC’s upcoming lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project.
The agreement, which converts an earlier Heads of Agreement into a definitive contract, strengthens ADNOC’s position in the Asian LNG market and reinforces its reputation as a reliable long-term energy partner.
Under the deal, LNG cargoes can be delivered to any port in India, thereby enhancing the country’s energy security and meeting rising demand. By 2029, IndianOil is set to become ADNOC’s largest LNG customer, with a total offtake of 2.2 mtpa — including 1.2 mtpa from Das Island operations and 1 mtpa from the Ruwais LNG facility.
Rashid Khalfan Al Mazrouei, ADNOC Senior Vice President of Marketing, said the agreement underscores “the robust energy relations between the UAE and India,” adding that ADNOC will continue to provide lower-carbon gas to power homes and industries worldwide.
The Ruwais LNG project, situated in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, is anticipated to commence operations in 2028. Once complete, it will be the first LNG plant in the Middle East powered by clean energy, positioning it among the lowest-carbon intensity LNG facilities globally. The plant will feature two liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), more than doubling ADNOC Gas’ current output to approximately 15 mtpa.
To date, more than 8 mtpa of Ruwais’ total production capacity has already been sold through long-term agreements, highlighting strong global demand. The facility will also incorporate advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve efficiency and sustainability.
The deal builds on the UAE–India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022, which continues to expand bilateral trade and energy cooperation between the two nations.
