Bollywood playback singer Arijit Singh, often regarded as the voice of a generation, announced on January 27 that he will be retiring from playback singing. Sharing the news on Instagram, Arijit thanked his fans for their unwavering support over the years and described his musical journey as “wonderful.” He confirmed that he will no longer take up new assignments as a playback vocalist but reassured fans that this decision does not mark an exit from music altogether.

On his private X account, Arijit elaborated on the reasons behind his decision, explaining that it was neither sudden nor the result of a single incident. He admitted to a sense of creative restlessness, stating that he often gets bored and changes arrangements of the same songs during performances. “I need to do some other music to live,” he wrote. He also expressed excitement about new talent entering the industry and the motivation it could bring, saying, “Another reason is I am excited to hear some singer come up and give me real motivation.”
Looking ahead, Arijit shared plans to return to his musical roots in Indian classical music and explore independent creative projects. He confirmed that he would complete all pending commitments, meaning some previously recorded songs may still be released this year. Arijit emphasized that he is not stepping away from music entirely but intends to grow as a “small little artist” and continue learning and creating on his own.
Arijit Singh’s career began in 2005 as a contestant on the reality show Fame Gurukul and he made his Hindi film debut in 2011 with Phir Mohabbat from Murder 2. However, it was the 2013 hit Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 that catapulted him to superstardom. Over the years, he has delivered countless iconic songs such as Channa Mereya, Kesariya, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Tera Yaar Hoon Main, leaving an indelible mark on Bollywood music. His recent work includes Ghar Kab Aaoge from Border 2 and Maatrubhumi from Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan.
Fans have expressed shock and gratitude on social media, celebrating Arijit’s contribution to music and reminiscing about the songs that defined a generation. While playback singing may no longer be part of his career, Arijit Singh’s musical journey is far from over, as he continues to explore new avenues and return to the roots of his craft.
