At least 16 people were killed in a passenger bus crash on Indonesia’s main island of Java shortly after midnight on Monday, officials reported.
The bus, carrying 34 passengers, lost control on a toll road, struck a concrete barrier, and rolled onto its side, according to Budiono, the head of a search and rescue agency who is known by a single name, as is common in Indonesia.
The inter-province bus was travelling from the capital Jakarta to the country’s ancient royal city of Yogyakarta when it overturned while entering a curved exit ramp at the Krapyak tollway in Central Java’s Semarang city, he said.
“The forceful impact threw several passengers and left them trapped against the bus body,” Budiono said.
Witnesses told authorities that the bus was travelling at high speed before the driver lost control.
