The Kingdom of Bahrain has officially begun its term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2026–2027.

Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, attended a flag-raising ceremony at UN headquarters to mark the commencement of the term.

This marks the second time in Bahrain’s history that the kingdom has held a seat on the Security Council.

The 15-member Security Council consists of five permanent members – Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly. Each year, five non-permanent members are replaced.
