After years of rumors, legal drama, and fan petitions that could fill a treasure chest, the saga of Pirates of the Caribbean has taken a thrilling turn. Longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has publicly signaled that Johnny Depp is in the plans for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and fans everywhere are raising their grog cups in celebration.
Speaking at the Producers Guild Awards, Bruckheimer addressed swirling speculation that the beloved pirate might be sidelined in the next sequel. His response was unmistakably optimistic: “If it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.” That’s as close as we’ve gotten to an official confirmation yet.

This matters because Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is more than just a character he’s become the face of the franchise since the very first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), turned a theme-park ride into one of Disney’s biggest cinematic adventures. His quirky charm and unpredictable antics helped define five blockbuster films over nearly two decades.
But the road hasn’t been smooth. After the fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), Depp stepped away amid very public legal battles. That left the future of the series in question and fueled wild speculation about new leads, possible spin-offs, and even a storyline featuring Jack’s son.
Bruckheimer hasn’t ruled out fresh faces reports suggest conversations with Margot Robbie about joining the pirate universe but he’s pushed back against the idea that Sparrow has been written off. In fact, there’s a strong current of hope that Depp’s return could help bridge the old guard and whatever new direction Disney decides to chart.
There’s no official release date yet, and nothing is locked in behind studio doors. But if Bruckheimer gets his way, Captain Jack Sparrow might still have a few more sea shanties left in him and movie theaters won’t know what hit them when that compass finally points back to adventure.
