China’s technological self-reliance is set to accelerate as the government pledged to intensify efforts to strengthen domestic innovation and expand the country’s artificial intelligence capabilities amid rising global competition in advanced technologies.
Speaking during the annual policy agenda in Beijing, Chinese officials emphasized that the country will prioritize breakthroughs in key technology sectors, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing, as part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign technology.
Premier Li Qiang said the government would push for faster development of strategic emerging industries while expanding support for research, industrial innovation, and digital infrastructure. The plan aims to strengthen China’s domestic technology ecosystem and boost productivity across the economy.
The push for technological self-reliance comes as China faces increasing restrictions from the United States and its allies on access to advanced chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. These curbs have accelerated Beijing’s efforts to build independent capabilities in critical areas such as chip design, computing infrastructure, and artificial intelligence development.
China has identified AI as a key driver of economic transformation and industrial competitiveness. Authorities are encouraging technology companies, research institutions, and universities to increase investment in AI development, data infrastructure, and large-scale computing platforms.
Government support is also expected to focus on expanding domestic semiconductor and other strategic technology supply chains, while fostering closer collaboration between public research institutions and private technology firms.
China’s technology strategy is being closely watched by global markets and industry leaders, as advances in AI chips, robotics, and digital infrastructure could reshape the competitive landscape in the global technology sector.
Analysts say the renewed emphasis on technological self-reliance reflects Beijing’s long-term ambition to become a global leader in advanced technologies while reducing vulnerabilities created by geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions.
The China technological self-reliance initiative is therefore expected to remain a central pillar of the country’s economic and industrial policy as it seeks to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving global technology race.
