China’s online literature sector experienced substantial growth in 2024, with the number of domestic users reaching 575 million, marking a 10.6% increase from the previous year. This surge is attributed to the rising popularity among younger readers, particularly those aged 26 to 45, who now constitute approximately 50% of the audience, as per Reuters.
The industry also witnessed a significant expansion in its international reach. Overseas readership grew by 16.5%, reaching 352 million users across more than 200 countries. This global market generated revenue of 5.07 billion yuan (approximately $706 million) in 2024.
In terms of content, the online literature catalog expanded to over 33 million works by the end of 2024, with 2 million new titles added that year—a 7% increase from 2023. Notably, science fiction emerged as a standout genre, with 180,000 new sci-fi titles published in 2024, reflecting its growing popularity and cultural significance.
The surge in overseas readership is supported by advancements in AI-assisted translation technologies and the proliferation of online platforms, which have facilitated faster and more accurate translations of Chinese literary works. These developments have enabled Chinese online literature to reach a broader international audience, contributing to China’s cultural export strategy and enhancing its soft power on the global stage.
As the industry continues to grow, Chinese online literature is poised to play an increasingly important role in global cultural exchanges, offering diverse genres and unique storytelling that resonate with readers worldwide.
