Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), reviewed the progress of the first phase of the seawater desalination plant at the Hassyan complex, which has reached approximately 90 per cent completion.

The entire project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027. With total investments of AED 3.377 billion, the Hassyan desalination plant is among the world’s largest seawater reverse-osmosis (RO) water production facilities and represents DEWA’s first Independent Water Producer (IWP) project.

Al Tayer said the project reflects the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to deliver advanced, integrated energy and water infrastructure that supports Dubai’s rapid growth and meets increasing demand for water services. The project aligns with Dubai’s water security policy, sustainable development plans, and DEWA’s strategy to expand desalinated water production capacity.

During the visit, Al Tayer toured several sections of the facility, highlighting its role in strengthening smart desalinated water infrastructure and supporting the Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030. Representatives from Hassyan Water Company A provided comprehensive briefings on the project’s current status.

Al Tayer highlighted that DEWA is developing desalination plants using reverse-osmosis technology, which consumes less energy than multi-stage distillation, making it a more sustainable solution. By 2030, DEWA plans to add 240 million imperial gallons per day to its desalination capacity through seawater RO technology.

Al Tayer was accompanied by Mohammad Abunayyan, Chairman of ACWA Power; Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation; Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power; Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA; along with members of the Board of Directors of Hassyan Water Company A, and several senior DEWA officials and engineers.
