Dozens of people remain unaccounted for after a boat carrying over 200 migrants capsized off the coast of Gambia, the country’s Defence Ministry said on Friday.
The ministry reported that 96 people were rescued and seven bodies were recovered following the incident on Wednesday. The vessel was later located on a sandbank.
Officials said 10 of those who survived are in critical condition. The migrants on board are believed to have come from several African nations.
Each year, migrants from Gambia, Senegal and other West African countries attempt the dangerous journey to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago and part of the European Union, in hopes of finding better opportunities.
