Dubai Municipality has launched a pilot phase of a smart camera system under its “Smart Waste Management” framework, aimed at improving public cleanliness monitoring and speeding up responses to violations.
The system uses artificial intelligence and real-time data analysis to strengthen oversight and enforcement efforts.
According to Dubai Municipality, the pilot phase involves installing smart cameras on selected waste collection and transportation vehicles. The initiative is designed to monitor cleanliness levels across roads and residential areas, as well as detect illegal waste dumping near containers, sidewalks, and public spaces.
Images captured by the cameras are analysed instantly and displayed on interactive digital dashboards, enabling field teams to respond quickly and take corrective action.
The system tracks a range of negative behaviours, particularly littering in public areas, which carries fines of up to AED 500, along with the improper disposal of furniture and bulky waste and other actions that negatively impact the city’s appearance and contribute to waste accumulation.
Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said the project is part of a strategic approach to enhance monitoring efficiency, support data-driven decision-making, and develop sustainable policies that improve the urban environment.
He added that the results of the pilot phase will be assessed before expanding the system’s implementation.
Engineer Adel Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, noted that the system enables accurate documentation of violations and faster corrective measures, while ensuring community privacy in line with Dubai’s smart city and digital transformation objectives.
The initiative supports the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, contributing to enhanced sustainability, improved quality of life, and reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global leader in innovation and sustainability.
