Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced significant improvements in traffic efficiency following the first phase of its central traffic signal control system upgrade to the next-generation ‘UTC-UX Fusion’ platform.

According to RTA, intersections across key corridors recorded traffic flow improvements ranging from 16% to 37%, underscoring the role of advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics in shaping the emirate’s smart mobility vision.

Phase 1 Impact

Operational trials revealed notable results:

  • Jumeirah Street intersections: 37% increase in efficiency
  • Al Badaa Street intersections: 29.4% improvement
  • Kuwait Street intersections: 16.9% improvement
  • Omar Bin Al Khattab Street intersections: 16.4% improvement

Overall, travel times improved by 10% to 20%, marking tangible progress toward reducing congestion and enhancing coordination between intersections.

Smarter, Safer, Faster

The upgraded system applies digital twin principles, allowing engineers to test traffic scenarios virtually before implementation. This proactive approach enables smarter signal timing adjustments, reduced waiting times, smoother flows, and prioritisation for emergency vehicles, public transport, and pedestrians.

Beyond cars, the system supports multimodal transport, integrating private vehicles, public transit, cyclists, and pedestrians, while being future-ready for connected vehicle (V2X) technologies and data integration from smart devices.

Next Phases

The RTA confirmed that the project will continue in multiple phases, with full completion expected by Q3 2026, covering around 300 traffic signal intersections across Dubai.

This initiative reaffirms Dubai’s leadership in leveraging AI-driven transport infrastructure to deliver a more efficient, sustainable, and safe urban mobility experience for residents and visitors alike.
