A severe dust storm sweeping through Iraq’s northern Kirkuk province has left more than 100 people hospitalized, with health officials warning of the storm’s harsh impact on vulnerable populations.

According to Saman Yaba, spokesperson for Kirkuk’s Health Directorate, at least 109 individuals experienced breathing difficulties and were treated at various hospitals across the province. He noted that most of those affected responded well to treatment and have since been stabilized. “All medical facilities were operating at full capacity to handle the sudden influx of patients,” he added.

The dust storm began in the early hours of Tuesday and gained strength as the day progressed, blanketing the region in a thick haze and significantly reducing air quality. Residents with asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions were especially affected, prompting public health officials to issue warnings and advise people to remain indoors when possible.

Dust storms are not uncommon in Iraq, particularly during the summer months, but the intensity of this particular event caught many off guard. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to use protective masks and limit outdoor activity until conditions improve.
