Elon Musk said Tuesday that he intends to significantly reduce his political donations moving forward. His statement comes as a notable shift from the billionaire’s role as one of the most prominent financial backers of President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.

“I think, in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” Musk said during an interview at the Qatar Economic Forum.

When asked why, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO replied, “I think I’ve done enough.”

Musk, who also heads the government-reduction initiative DOGE, spent over $250 million in support of Trump’s successful bid for a second term. His financial contributions helped fuel not only Trump’s presidential campaign but also Republican efforts to secure slim majorities in Congress.

On whether he might resume large-scale political giving, Musk left the door open. “Well, if I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it,” he said. “I do not currently see a reason,” he added.

The comments may come as a disappointment to GOP candidates and strategists eyeing Musk’s support in the upcoming 2026 election cycle. Beyond his presidential donations, Musk contributed more than $19 million in the final weeks of the 2024 races to help Republicans gain control of both chambers of Congress.

His influence extended to the judicial arena as well. Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, was among the largest outside spenders in this year’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election, which determined the ideological balance of the court. Musk-linked groups reportedly spent more than $13 million on the race. His preferred candidate ultimately lost in the April 1 contest.

Musk’s apparent retreat from heavy political spending marks a significant recalibration of his role in U.S. electoral politics — at least for now.
