The European Union (EU) has issued a strong condemnation of the Iranian attacks targeting several countries in the region, describing them as a grave breach of sovereignty and an unacceptable escalation that endangers regional security and stability.
The EU urged Tehran to immediately cease indiscriminate strikes and to avoid any further actions that could intensify or expand the conflict.
After an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels to assess the rapidly evolving situation and its implications for regional security, energy supplies, and international maritime navigation, the bloc indicated that additional sanctions against Iran remain a possibility.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that the Union is monitoring developments in Iran and the broader Middle East with deep concern, reaffirming its commitment to regional stability, adherence to international law, and the protection of its security interests.
She noted that the EU has already imposed extensive sanctions in response to the actions of the Iranian authorities.
The statement called for maximum restraint, the safeguarding of civilians, and full compliance with international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law. It cautioned that the Middle East could face severe consequences if the conflict becomes prolonged.
The EU expressed solidarity with regional partners that have been targeted or affected by the attacks and reiterated its dedication to maintaining regional stability and protecting civilian lives.
The statement also emphasized the importance of Iran’s full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and its adherence to legal obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement. It described nuclear safety as a critical priority, alongside the need to preserve maritime security and uphold freedom of navigation.
