At least 16 people have died due to torrential rain and flooding in central and eastern Europe with several more reported as missing, reports German broadcaster DW. The death toll has been reported across The Czech Republic, Poland, Austria and authorities are warning that the worst may be yet to come.
Local media reports that two men aged 70 and 80 drowned in Austria after being trapped by rising flood water. According to authorities, the number of victims in Poland has risen to six as storm Boris lashes the region.
Officials are describing Storm Boris as a “catastrophe of epic proportions” with hundreds of thousands of people evacuated from their homes across Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
The ongoing flooding has burst dams, inundated streets and knocked out power lines in several neighborhoods across Europe. Thousands of residents in the Czech Republic have been left without hot water and electricity, reports CNN.
The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, described images from the flooded areas across parts of Europe as “dramatic”. The region has received more than a month’s rain in days. Firefighters and rescue teams are working to evacuate people to safer areas.
