The Federal Aviation Administration reported that a United Airlines flight heading to Tokyo was diverted back to Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia after the flight encountered an engine failure during the take-off process.
A spokesperson of United Airlines stated that the flight had landed shortly after takeoff because of a power loss in one engine. According to a spokesperson, there were no reported injuries among the 275 passengers and 15 crew members aboard.
The social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) had photos and videos of the smoke as it rose near the runway at Dulles, which is approximately 25 miles (40 km) from Washington, D.C., and the nearest international airport to the U.S. capital.
The FAA announced that it will investigate the incident of United Flight 803, in which a Boeing 777-200 airliner was involved.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy posted on X that one of the engine covers of the plane detached and caught fire on the ground at the airport. Therefore, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority reported the fire was put out.
Thus, the United Airlines spokesperson said the flight would be rescheduled later in the afternoon on another aircraft.
