Sudan’s Civil Aviation Authority has announced the resumption of flights to and from Port Sudan International Airport, following a temporary suspension caused by drone strikes.
In a statement released Tuesday night, the authority urged citizens to contact airline booking offices “to reschedule their flights” after all air traffic was halted earlier in the day due to the attacks.
The drone strikes on Tuesday targeted key locations in Port Sudan, a strategic Red Sea port city in eastern Sudan. Among the sites hit were the international airport, a hotel near the temporary presidential palace, and an oil export terminal, according to eyewitness reports.
Although no group has officially claimed responsibility, the Sudanese military has blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the attacks, which reportedly began on Sunday, according to Xinhua news agency.
The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum stated that the RSF launched drone strikes on a military airbase, a fuel depot, and several civilian facilities over the past two days.
Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF since mid-April 2023. The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives, although the exact toll remains unknown.
The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 15 million people have been displaced by the conflict, both internally and across borders.— IANS
