French fries, a favourite snack across the UAE, may pose hidden health risks if consumed frequently, according to recent studies highlighting the formation of acrylamide, a chemical produced when starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies acrylamide as a “probable human carcinogen” based on animal studies. While definitive human studies are still ongoing, nutritionists warn that regular consumption of fried potato products could contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and even cancer-related risks.

Experts also point out that beyond acrylamide, French fries are high in calories and unhealthy fats, which can impact long-term health.

“Air frying or baking potatoes instead of deep-frying, along with proper storage to control sugar content, can reduce acrylamide formation,” said a leading nutritionist. Boiling or steaming potatoes is also recommended as a safer alternative.

For UAE residents who enjoy this popular snack, moderation and mindful preparation are key. Occasional indulgence is unlikely to be harmful, but frequent consumption of fried potato products may carry long-term health implications.
