A sweeping wave of protests, led by young Nepalis, has erupted across the country this week, evolving from defiance of a social media ban into a powerful movement demanding political accountability. The unrest began after the government implemented a ban on major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X in India’s Nepal, citing their failure to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
However, for many, the restrictions served as the final trigger in a growing list of frustrations. As one student, Yujan Rajbhandari, 24, put it: “We are protesting against corruption that has been institutionalised in Nepal.” His sentiment was echoed by 20-year-old Ikshama Tumrok: “I was protesting against the ‘authoritarian attitude’ of the government,” as per AFP.
Protests Escalate, From Apps to Anger
What began as a reaction to blocked apps quickly morphed into mass mobilization. Tens of thousands gathered in Kathmandu, chanting against corruption and censorship, while attempting to breach Parliament. In response, authorities deployed tear gas, water cannons, and even army units. Tragically, by Monday noon, one protester had reportedly died and 80 were injured amid the citywide lockdown and 10 pm curfew.
