Great Britain’s George Russell captured his first Formula 1 victory of the season on Sunday, June 15, 2025, with a dominant, wire-to-wire performance at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Russell started from pole position after what he called “an incredible pole lap” on Saturday, June 14, 2025. He successfully held off four-time world champion Max Verstappen at the start and remained unchallenged for the remainder of the race.

Describing his sixth career pole, Russell said it was “probably the most exhilarating lap I’ve ever done in my life because around this circuit you’ve got to be so committed.”

The race saw late drama as McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collided with just four laps to go, forcing Norris to retire. Piastri managed to finish fourth, extending his lead in the championship standings to 198 points—22 ahead of Norris. The incident is under investigation by race stewards.

Verstappen secured second place, moving him to third overall in the standings with 155 points, while Russell’s victory brought him to fourth place with 136 points. There are still 14 races remaining in the 24-race 2025 calendar.

Russell’s teammate at Mercedes, 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, claimed third place, becoming the third-youngest driver in history to achieve a podium finish.

“It was so stressful but (I’m) super happy,” Antonelli said. “I had a good start, managed to jump into P3 and just stayed up there at the front.”

The win marks Russell’s fourth career victory and his first since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

“I want to thank the team and the factory for their efforts,” said Russell. “Let’s see what happens in the upcoming races but I’m just going to enjoy this one for now!”

Next up on the F1 calendar is the MSC Cruises Austrian Grand Prix, scheduled for June 27–29.
