Germany increased the construction of solar panels and wind turbines last year, with installed renewable energy capacity rising by 11 percent to approximately 210 gigawatts, according to the country’s energy regulator on Thursday.
The Federal Network Agency noted that the pace of expansion remained similar to previous years, following growth of about 12 percent in both 2023 and 2024.
Solar power made up more than half of Germany’s total installed renewable energy capacity in 2025, reaching 117 gigawatts. Newly added solar capacity totaled 16.4 gigawatts, with Bavaria leading the expansion at 4.5 gigawatts.
Small photovoltaic systems installed by households, known as “balcony power plants,” also gained traction. Registered mini solar units accounted for 3.2 percent of new solar capacity last year, up from 2.5 percent in 2024.
Although the increase in solar capacity was slightly below the previous year’s level, onshore wind power saw significant growth. New land-based wind turbine installations totalled 4.6 gigawatts, up from 2.6 gigawatts the year before.
Germany’s onshore wind capacity now stands at 68.1 gigawatts, the Federal Network Agency reported.
Under government targets, this figure is expected to reach 115 gigawatts by 2030, a goal that would require roughly doubling last year’s expansion pace.
