Australia continued their fightback on day two of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, with free-flowing opener Jake Weatherald anchoring the innings while Travis Head fell cheaply. At tea, the hosts were 130-1, still trailing England’s first-innings total of 334, but displaying aggressive intent in front of a packed crowd.

Weatherald’s Maiden Test Fifty

In just his second Test, Weatherald showcased remarkable composure and flair, scoring an unbeaten 59 off 45 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six. He partnered with Marnus Labuschagne, who was on 27 at tea, steadily chipping away at England’s lead.

Head Falls After Early Strike

Travis Head, who starred in Australia’s eight-wicket victory in the first Test at Perth, struggled to find rhythm after being promoted to opener in place of the injured Usman Khawaja. He fell for 33, edging a delivery from Brydon Carse to Gus Atkinson, ending Australia’s early momentum.

England’s First-Innings Highlights

England resumed the day on 325-9, with Joe Root unbeaten on 138 after rescuing the side from 5-2 on day one. Root added nine runs with Jofra Archer before the final wicket fell, completing a record 10th-wicket partnership of 70 at the Gabba. Veteran Mitchell Starc took 6-75, surpassing Wasim Akram to become the most successful left-arm fast bowler in Test history.

Australia Look to Build Momentum

Following Head’s dismissal, Weatherald quickly regained the initiative, punishing England’s bowlers with crisp cuts and drives. His composed strokeplay and early boundaries kept Australia in contention as they aim to reduce the deficit and set up a thrilling contest in the series.
