Online shopping sales in the Republic of Korea rose 6.8 percent year-on-year to a record high in November, fueled by strong demand for food-related services, data released Friday showed.
The total value of online shopping transactions reached 24.15 trillion won (US$16.75 billion) in November, an increase of 1.53 trillion won compared with the same period last year, according to figures from the Ministry of Data and Statistics.
Yonhap News Agency reported that this is the highest level recorded since the ministry began collecting the data in 2017.
Sales in food services, along with food and beverage purchases, surged 13.7 percent from a year earlier, largely driven by promotional campaigns offered by food delivery platforms.
Spending on travel and transportation services climbed 8.5 percent year-on-year, supported by a rebound in domestic and international travel demand and various promotional events in the latter half of the year.
Meanwhile, online sales of home appliances and electronic products declined 4.9 percent, mainly due to fewer promotional offers by online shopping malls compared to the previous year.
Purchases made via smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices rose 7.9 percent year-on-year to 18.59 trillion won, also reaching a new record level.
