Local officials in New York City announced on Monday the complete shutdown of the city’s transportation system, allowing only emergency travel, as a powerful winter storm swept across the north-eastern United States.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm could bring snowfall totals of up to 60 centimetres in some areas, making travel “extremely dangerous.” Authorities cautioned that strong winds and heavy snow already covering major landmarks and sharply reducing visibility could lead to power outages.
A state of emergency has been declared, prompting the closure of streets, highways, and bridges to cars, trucks, and all types of bicycles. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid nonessential travel during what officials described as the most severe storm to strike the region in a decade.
