Next time you see school buses activating their “Stop” signs, it’s mandatory to adhere to what follows next. As per a recent report, close to 29,000 drivers across the UAE were penalized in 2024 for failing to stop after the sign was highlighted.
Recent data released by the Ministry of Interior mentioned that a total of 28,920 motorists violated this regulation, which not only endangers young lives but also results in an AED1,000 fine and 10 black points on the driver’s license.
The law requires drivers to come to a complete stop in both directions on two-way roads when a school bus displays the extended stop sign, maintaining a minimum distance of five meters from the bus.
“Too often, we see drivers ignoring this critical rule, putting young lives at risk,” said Major Saud Al Shaiba, Director of Traffic Awareness and Media at Sharjah Police. He emphasized that both public awareness and strict enforcement are vital to ensuring the safety of schoolchildren. School bus drivers are also obligated to activate the stop sign while picking up or dropping off students. Failing to do so carries a Dh500 fine and six black points.
“These are not just rules—they are safeguards,” Al Shaiba added.
Abu Dhabi Tops List of Violations
The majority of the violations were reported in Abu Dhabi, which recorded 23,787 cases. Dubai followed with 4,990 infractions. The numbers dropped significantly in other emirates: Ajman reported 104 violations, Sharjah recorded 36, and Fujairah saw just three.
Authorities continue to call on all motorists to drive with heightened caution around school buses and to adhere strictly to traffic laws intended to protect children.
