The death toll from severe flooding in Nepal has reached at least 101, as relentless monsoon rains inundate large parts of the country. Low-lying areas of the capital, Kathmandu, were overwhelmed by floodwaters, with many more missing as search and rescue operations continue.

Monsoon Devastation Across Nepal

Since Friday, heavy monsoon rains have triggered flash floods and landslides across eastern and central Nepal. Key highways have been damaged, and major rivers have swollen beyond their banks, leaving entire communities cut off. The Nepalese police reported that 64 people remain missing, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams navigate difficult conditions to reach those trapped.

Kathmandu Valley experienced 240 mm (9.4 inches) of rainfall within 24 hours, the heaviest in over five decades, according to the country’s weather bureau. The flooding is the latest in a series of extreme weather events that scientists say are being exacerbated by climate change.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Nepalese authorities have deployed teams to the hardest-hit areas, working to provide relief and continue the search for survivors. With infrastructure damage hampering efforts, aid organizations are also stepping in to assist communities in need. Flooding and landslides are common during Nepal’s June-September monsoon season, but this year’s impact has been particularly severe.

The situation remains critical as the floodwaters continue to threaten vulnerable areas, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
