The companies have announced that QatarEnergy has signed a 20-year sales and purchase agreement with Malaysia’s Petronas for the supply of liquefied natural gas.
As per the agreement, QatarEnergy will supply 2 million tonnes per annum of LNG to Petronas, which will begin from 2028. The SPA was signed in Doha during a ceremony, in addition to the 21st International Conference & Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas “LNG2026.”
It will be the initial long-term LNG SPA between the two state-owned energy corporations. The agreement highlights the growing role of Qatar as one of the biggest LNG suppliers in the world, with the country pursuing significant production expansion initiatives that will witness its export volume rise later this decade.
The press release reported that the deal “reflects the continued confidence and trust between the two organizations and underscores their shared vision for a sustainable energy future and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation.”
The signatories were Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the minister of state for energy affairs, as well as president and CEO of QatarEnergy, and YM Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz, the president and group CEO of Petronas.
Al-Kaabi said, “QatarEnergy is pleased to enter into this new LNG SPA with Petronas, which highlights our continued commitment to support the growing energy needs of Malaysia as well as our customers across the globe.”
QatarEnergy has mentioned that the deal is part of its continued commitment to bolster international collaborations, advance cleaner energy options, and sustain economic expansion targets in major markets across the world.
QatarEnergy signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and JERA on February 3, the largest power generation of the country, to supply Japan with extra quantities of liquefied natural gas during emergency situations.
The MoU, which was signed during the margins of the same conference in Doha, is waiting for QatarEnergy to respond, in case of unforeseeable emergencies impacting Japan, like natural disasters.
The agreement also provides bilateral consultation mechanisms in such situations on the proper response measures. It added in a press release that the MoU further expects QatarEnergy to provide energy security to all its customers by providing access to additional LNG volumes in case of emergencies and disruption of supply.
It also highlights the fact that Qatar has the capacity to offer stable LNG supplies and its long-standing reputation as an effective and credible energy supplier.
