The International Astronomical Centre revealed on Thursday that the majority of Islamic countries are set to observe the crescent moon marking the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan on Friday, 28th February 2025.
According to Mohammed Shawkat Odeh, the Director of the Centre, the crescent moon may be visible using telescopes in certain parts of the Islamic world on this date. However, since the moon’s conjunction occurs before sunset, and the moon sets after sunset across all regions, it is highly expected that most Islamic countries will officially announce Saturday, 1st March, as the first day of Ramadan.
This announcement follows the traditional practice of sighting the new moon, which signals the beginning of the lunar month of Ramadan for millions of Muslims worldwide.
The sighting of the crescent moon is crucial for religious observance, as it marks the start of the fasting period and a time for prayer, reflection, and charity. -WAM
