Despite economic uncertainties and market volatility, Americans continue to view real estate and gold as the most reliable long-term investment options, according to a recent Gallup poll conducted between April 1 and April 14, 2025.

Real Estate Maintains Its Lead

For the 12th consecutive year, real estate remains the top choice, with 37% of U.S. adults considering it the best long-term investment. This enduring preference persists even as high home prices and elevated mortgage rates have made homeownership inaccessible for many.

A separate Gallup survey indicates that 72% of Americans believe it’s a bad time to buy a home, and only 53% of renters plan to purchase a home within the next five to ten years—the lowest rate ever recorded by Gallup.

Gold’s Growing Appeal

Gold has solidified its position as the second most favored long-term investment, with 23% of respondents selecting it, up from 18% the previous year. This rise is attributed to gold’s reputation as a safe-haven asset amid economic instability, including recent market turbulence following tariff announcements and concerns over a potential recession.

Declining Confidence in Stocks and Cryptocurrencies

The poll reveals a decline in confidence in stocks and cryptocurrencies. Only 16% of Americans now view stocks as the best long-term investment, down from 22% last year. Cryptocurrencies have significantly declined in favorability, with only 4% of respondents now considering them the best long-term investment, down from 8% in 2022.

Investment Preferences by Income Level

Investment preferences vary by income. Higher-income Americans (earning $100,000 or more annually) are likelier to favor stocks, while lower-income individuals prefer tangible assets, such as real estate and gold. This trend reflects differing risk tolerances and financial strategies across income brackets.

Despite economic challenges, the Gallup poll highlights Americans’ enduring trust in real estate and gold as stable long-term investments. While enthusiasm for stocks and cryptocurrencies has waned, the enduring appeal of tangible assets highlights a cautious approach to wealth preservation in uncertain times.
