Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a series of rapid infrastructure upgrades aimed at significantly enhancing traffic flow and connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Street. The improvements target critical intersections and bridges to alleviate congestion in key areas of the emirate.
The works involved widening the exit from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street, expanding it from one lane to two. This effectively doubled the exit’s capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour. As a direct result, travel times during peak morning and evening periods have been reduced by up to 40%, while vehicle queue lengths decreased by as much as 50%.
Additionally, RTA increased the capacity of the bridge over First Al Khail Road, expanding it from three lanes to four in both directions. This upgrade benefits vehicles traveling between Al Khail Road, Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Al Hadiqa Street. The enhancement increased the bridge’s capacity by over 33%, from 4,500 to 6,000 vehicles per hour, and reduced peak-hour crossing times from seven minutes to four minutes, an improvement of approximately 40%.
RTA further widened the connecting ramps between the surface road and the bridge over First Al Khail Road from one lane to two. This specific enhancement improved traffic flow by reducing congestion and waiting times by more than 50%, particularly during midday and evening peak hours, facilitating smoother vehicle movement between the major arteries.
These enhancements are part of RTA’s master plan to deliver over 75 traffic improvement projects across key areas of Dubai in 2025. The initiative aligns with the RTA’s strategy for sustainable development, which aims to improve the quality of life, enhance community well-being, and strengthen Dubai’s position as a global leader in integrated infrastructure and seamless, sustainable mobility, thereby proactively responding to the emirate’s rapid urban and population growth.
