Seven people have died in France in incidents directly or indirectly linked to the ongoing heatwave, French Junior Energy Minister Maud Bregeon said on Tuesday.

According to Bregeon, five of the seven deaths involved people drowning in lakes, rivers, or at beaches amid the extreme weather conditions.

She said the government has instructed local authorities to implement protective measures during sports and outdoor events as temperatures continue to rise across the country.

France has been experiencing above-average temperatures since Saturday, with several regions affected by intense heat.

Most of Brittany has been placed under an orange-level weather alert by Meteo France, which forecast temperatures of up to 36 degrees Celsius on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities have continued urging residents to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take precautions during outdoor activities as the heatwave persists.
