A cluster of powerful earthquakes struck Japan’s western prefectures of Shimane and Tottori on Tuesday, beginning with a tremor of preliminary magnitude 6.4, according to the national weather agency. No tsunami warning was issued.
Kyodo News reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency urged continued caution, noting that seismic activity remains high and that earthquakes of a comparable magnitude could occur over the coming week.
The main quake hit eastern Shimane Prefecture at 10:18 a.m. at a depth of 11 kilometers. Its magnitude was later revised upward from the initially announced 6.2, and it registered an upper 5 on Japan’s seven-point seismic intensity scale. Several aftershocks followed in quick succession, including a magnitude 5.1 quake at 10:28 a.m. and another measuring 5.4 at 10:37 a.m.
As of 11 a.m., local authorities reported no injuries or property damage in Tottori Prefecture.
