A familiar pattern is playing out at the box office: critics hesitate, audiences show up.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has opened to $372.5 million worldwide, delivering the biggest Hollywood debut of the year so far and reinforcing the pull of franchise-led, family-driven cinema.
The film earned $130.9 million over the weekend in North America, taking its extended five-day total to $190.1 million after opening midweek. Internationally, it added $182.4 million across 80 markets, with Mexico leading the overseas run, followed by the U.K. and Ireland.
The scale of the opening reflects a release strategy built around timing and reach. Universal Pictures rolled the film out ahead of the Easter holiday window, capturing school break audiences and giving it a longer runway to build momentum before the weekend.
What stands out, though, is not just the size of the debut but the disconnect behind it.
Reviews have been mixed, with critics less convinced by the sequel. Audiences, however, have responded far more positively. Exit data shows strong approval from families, the core demographic for the film, and solid overall ratings that point to repeat viewing potential.
That gap is not unusual for films of this kind. What matters more is turnout, and on that front, the film has delivered.
The performance also highlights the continuing strength of animation tied to established IP. The original The Super Mario Bros. Movie set a high bar with over $1.3 billion globally, and while the sequel has opened slightly below that pace, it remains firmly positioned for a strong theatrical run.
Elsewhere, the box office saw a reshuffle.
Project Hail Mary slipped to second place in its third weekend, adding $30.7 million, while The Drama debuted in third with $14.4 million.
The broader takeaway is straightforward. After a slow start to the year, the box office is beginning to gain momentum, driven once again by large-scale, familiar franchises that can quickly pull in global audiences.
For now, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” looks set to carry that momentum forward.
