Nepal has sworn in its first interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, marking a historic moment in the country’s political transition.
Karki, who previously served as the country’s first female Chief Justice, took the oath of office on Saturday at the residence of President Ramchandra Paudel, where she pledged to steer Nepal through its current period of political uncertainty.
The interim government is expected to focus on maintaining stability, overseeing administrative continuity, and preparing the ground for fresh elections after weeks of unrest and widespread protests across the country.
Karki’s appointment comes at a critical juncture, with Nepal’s major political parties under pressure to restore order and rebuild confidence in governance following student-led demonstrations that recently disrupted economic activity and damaged critical sectors, including tourism.
Political analysts in Kathmandu see her appointment as an attempt to bring a neutral and respected figure into leadership, ensuring calm while parties negotiate a longer-term political settlement.
As she assumes office, Karki faces the immediate challenge of balancing public expectations for reform with the urgent need to stabilize the economy and maintain law and order.
