According to U.S. media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce a trade deal with the United Kingdom on Thursday, following his social media teaser about a “major” upcoming agreement.
The New York Times and Politico reported that Trump is preparing to unveil the deal, citing sources familiar with the matter. While details remain limited, the agreement is expected to be announced during a news conference scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (14:00 GMT) in the Oval Office.
On Wednesday, Trump hinted at the deal in a social media post, describing it as a “major trade deal” with a “big, and highly respected country,” and suggested it would be the “first of many” to come.
The former president had recently introduced sweeping tariffs on several of the United States’ trading partners, though most were temporarily suspended to allow space for trade negotiations. Trump has repeatedly claimed that numerous countries are eager to strike new trade agreements with the U.S.
According to The New York Times, it is still unclear whether the deal with the UK has been fully finalized or if the two nations will announce a framework agreement requiring further negotiation.
The potential deal comes shortly after the UK secured a free trade agreement with India, marking its largest trade pact since its departure from the European Union. That agreement followed renewed talks in February and came amid rising global tariff tensions.
Since Brexit, Britain has been actively pursuing trade partnerships worldwide to diversify its economic ties and cushion the impact of strained relations with former EU partners and U.S. tariff threats that could hinder growth.
