U.S. President Donald Trump has signed the annual federal budget into law after it narrowly passed the House of Representatives by a 218-214 vote, aligning with the 249th anniversary of American independence. The legislation underscores Trump’s policy priorities, expanding military funding, extending sweeping tax cuts, and tightening immigration enforcement.
The newly signed law earmarks an estimated $4.5 trillion in tax reductions and includes significant allocations to accelerate the deportation of undocumented migrants. At the same time, it introduces substantial reductions in social welfare programs, including limitations to Medicaid and cuts to federal food assistance schemes.
According to preliminary estimates, approximately 17 million low-income Americans could lose health insurance coverage due to the Medicaid rollbacks. The budget also places stricter eligibility criteria on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a move expected to impact millions of households.
Speaking shortly after the signing, President Trump hailed the law as “a major achievement” and a cornerstone of his administration’s fiscal agenda. “This budget represents the will of the American people — strong on defense, tough on illegal immigration, and committed to prosperity,” he said.
The bill, a focal point of intense negotiations among Republican lawmakers, solidifies the Trump administration’s push to reshape federal spending around national security and tax relief while scaling back entitlement programs — a stance likely to remain central to the 2026 midterm election debates.
