UAE Launches Dh750 Million Emirates Road Upgrade To Reduce Travel Time By 45%

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) announced on Friday that an upgrade of Emirates Road, which will assist in cutting up to 45 percent of the travel time of commuters traveling between Ras Al Khaimah, through Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah, and Dubai, and the other way around.

The project that has an estimated cost of Dh750 million and a timeline of two years involves increasing the road to five lanes in each direction over 25km long, starting at the Al Badee Interchange to Umm Al Quwain. This will give the road a capacity of approximately 9,000 vehicles an hour, or a 65 per cent increase in the road volume.

The other activities in the project include the construction of Interchange No. 7, which will comprise six directional bridges, which will be 12.6km in length and will have up to 13,200 vehicles per hour capacity, and also includes the construction of 3.4km of service roads on both sides of the main road.

MoEI observed that the project will assist in reducing congestion and enhancing movement on one of the federal roads that is recorded to be highly used.

It will also help in cutting down emissions due to traffic congestion, not to mention that it will facilitate trade and movement of goods and services among the Emirates.

Assistant undersecretary for the Federal Infrastructure Projects Sector of MoEI, Youssef Abdullah, states, “The Emirates Road enhancement and upgrade project is not merely an expansion of a vital road, but a qualitative leap towards building a more advanced, efficient, and sustainable federal road network capable of meeting the demands of rapid population and economic growth.”
