Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the country’s strong focus on water security, describing it as a key topic across global dialogue platforms.
She highlighted that water security is central to many sustainability and environmental agreements and discussions, serving as a critical pillar for national development worldwide.
Within this framework, the UAE has prioritized innovation and solution-oriented approaches, leveraging technology and scientific research to address water-related challenges.
Dr. Al Dahak noted the launch of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative in early 2024, which provides sustainable and innovative solutions to enhance water security across multiple sectors, including agriculture through the Water Challenge for Agriculture. The announcement of winners and finalists for this challenge is currently awaited.
Speaking to Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the Sustainability Impact Forum held under the theme “Partnerships for Sustainable Water” at Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai as part of the World Governments Summit agenda she also stressed the UAE’s efforts to develop solutions for reducing water pollution.
She cited the work of clean river institutions in countries like the Philippines and Indonesia, highlighting potential UAE collaboration to tackle pollution at its source before it reaches oceans, noting its direct impact on marine ecosystems and aquatic life.
Dr. Al Dahak warned that water pollution affects food security by reducing fish stocks, which support coastal communities, and has broader implications for marine biodiversity.
Regarding the Sustainability Impact Forum, she said the UAE’s visionary approach has turned the platform into a global stage for addressing international challenges, shaping the future, and implementing practical solutions domestically while creating opportunities worldwide.
The forum features participation from numerous countries, including African nations and island states, which face significant climate-related economic and resource challenges in areas such as energy, water, and food security.
She noted that discussions at the forum will help clarify ongoing agendas and translate them into actionable solutions, contributing to the UN Water Conference, which the UAE will host later this year. She reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to developing and strengthening water solutions, particularly in Africa.
Dr. Al Dahak also highlighted the UAE’s efforts to create global platforms for solution-building and to promote environmental awareness from an early age.
She pointed out that 4th February marks National Environment Day, which aligns annually with the UAE’s Year of the Family theme. She emphasized the role of families in promoting environmental practices, shaping behaviour, and driving societal change in line with sustainable development goals. This includes conserving resources, focusing on water security, rationalizing consumption, and ensuring sustainability for future generations.
