New car sales in Britain surpassed two million units in 2025 for the first time since the pandemic, largely driven by growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs).
A total of 2.02 million new cars were registered in 2025, a 3.5 percent increase from 2024, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Although still below the pre-pandemic figure of 2.31 million in 2019, the number marks a return to the industry’s long-term annual average.
EVs made up about 23 percent of all registrations in 2025, with fully electric car sales rising nearly 25 percent year-on-year to reach a record high.
