Japan restarted the world’s largest nuclear power plant on Monday, following an earlier attempt that was quickly halted due to a minor technical issue.

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, located in the Niigata region, resumed operations at 05:00 GMT, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) confirmed in a statement.

TEPCO had initially attempted to start one of the plant’s seven reactors on 21 January but shut it down the next day after an alarm from the monitoring system was triggered.

The alarm detected slight fluctuations in the electrical current of a single cable, though these remained within a safe range, TEPCO officials explained during a news conference last week.

The company has since adjusted the alarm settings, confirming that the reactor is safe for operation.

TEPCO stated that commercial operations are scheduled to begin on or after 18 March, following another thorough inspection.

The January alarm had temporarily halted the plant’s first restart since the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
