Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, August 18, to discuss a potential trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.

Proposal for trilateral talks
“We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this. On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader also highlighted “positive signals” from Washington regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, noting that discussions with US officials have been focused on bolstering long-term security arrangements.
Commitment to peace
“We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners,” Zelensky added.
He stressed that Ukraine remains fully committed to working with international partners to secure peace, emphasizing that the trilateral format could serve as a vital platform to end the war.
Washington meeting carries high stakes
The upcoming meeting between Zelensky and Trump will be closely watched, as it may set the stage for a broader diplomatic initiative to end hostilities and establish new security frameworks for Ukraine. The possibility of direct trilateral engagement involving Russia underscores the high-stakes nature of the Washington talks.
