The ports in the Sultanate of Oman recorded strong growth in ship traffic and cargo handling during the first half of 2025, supported by steps taken by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology to enhance infrastructure, according to Oman Observer.

Container handling sees double-digit growth

Muhanna bin Musa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at the ministry, said container throughput registered a notable increase, with the total number of containers handled at Salalah, Sohar, and Duqm ports reaching 2,427,195 TEUs in the first half of 2025, compared to 2,173,508 TEUs during the same period in 2024 — a growth of 11.7%.

“This growth reflects the efficiency of logistics operations and the ports’ ability to meet growing demand,” he noted.

Increase in ship arrivals and cargo volumes

Omani ports and external marine docks welcomed 6,586 ships in the first half of 2025, up from 5,930 ships in the same period last year, marking 11.1% growth. Major hubs contributing to this rise included Sultan Qaboos Port, Shinas, and Salalah.

The total volume of goods handled rose to 70,114,527 tonnes during the first half of 2025, compared to 66,620,847 tonnes last year — an increase of 5.2%.

Vehicle and livestock imports highlight diversified activity

The Director-General reported that Omani ports received 50,248 vehicles and imported 2,694,293 heads of livestock, demonstrating the breadth of economic activities the ports efficiently support.

Infrastructure development initiatives

To strengthen long-term capacity, the ministry has awarded consultancy services for the design and supervision of Khor Jarama development, aimed at enhancing maritime readiness and utilisation. Additionally, tenders for the rehabilitation of Shannah and Masirah ports have also been awarded, signalling further infrastructure upgrades.
