According to reliable sources, the board is reviewing possible disciplinary action after Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals of the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. While no final decision has been announced, discussions are underway regarding a potential fine that could reach PKR 5 million (around $18,000) per player.

Board Frustrated With Early Exit

Pakistan’s campaign ended prematurely after losses to traditional rivals India and England in the Super Eight stage. Their crucial fixture against New Zealand was washed out, further denting their qualification hopes. Although they managed to defeat Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight match, it was not enough to secure a semi-final berth.

Sources indicate that frustration within the PCB is high, with officials reportedly unhappy about the team’s repeated underperformance in major ICC events.

“No final decision has been taken yet, but financial penalties are under consideration,” a source close to the board confirmed.

Debate Within PCB Over Financial Action

There appears to be internal debate within the board over whether imposing fines is the appropriate course of action. However, some insiders claim that the PCB is leaning towards enforcing the penalties as a strong message following what has been described as a below-par campaign.

The team returned home quietly from Sri Lanka in small groups. Captain Salman Ali Agha, along with senior batter Babar Azam and several other players, arrived in Lahore without any public reception.

Pressure From Multiple Fronts

The disappointing performance has reportedly not only upset PCB officials but also influential figures within the government. There is growing sentiment among decision-makers that despite consistent backing and financial support, the team has failed to deliver when it matters most.

Pakistan players holding central contracts receive monthly retainers, match fees, win bonuses, and shares from team sponsorship agreements. The proposed fines, if implemented, would be among the strongest financial measures taken against the squad in recent years.

An official announcement from the PCB is expected in the coming days as discussions continue.
