Veteran Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has dismissed suggestions that he is set to retire from T20 internationals, making it clear that he still has ambitions in the format despite Australia’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.

At 37, Maxwell would be 40 when Australia hosts the 2028 T20 World Cup — a tournament scheduled just months after cricket’s return at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. While speculation around his future intensified following Australia’s early exit and his recent dip in form, Maxwell says he is in no rush to make any final decisions.

No Immediate Retirement Plans

Speaking in Melbourne, Maxwell explained that with limited T20 internationals on Australia’s calendar over the next year, there is no urgency to announce anything regarding his future. Instead, he plans to assess how his body holds up and evaluate his performances over time.

Rather than focusing solely on statistics, Maxwell emphasized that his decision will depend on how he feels physically and how effectively he can contribute to the team. He believes he improved as the recent World Cup progressed and still feels capable of playing a meaningful role.

Looking Ahead to 2028

When asked about the possibility of featuring in both the Olympics and the home T20 World Cup in 2028, Maxwell adopted a balanced approach. While hopeful, he made it clear he is not setting timelines or targets. His primary focus remains on fitness and maintaining his ability to perform at the highest level.

Maxwell has already stepped away from One Day Internationals but remains committed to the shortest format, provided he continues to feel competitive and fit.

Australia’s Upcoming Schedule

Australia’s next T20I assignment is a three-match series against Bangladesh in June as part of a broader tour that also includes ODIs in Bangladesh and Pakistan. Maxwell confirmed that discussions with selectors are ongoing about his involvement in upcoming tours.

Busy Franchise Calendar

Away from international duties, Maxwell’s schedule remains packed. He has signed a two-year extension with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League and is set to feature in multiple global T20 competitions, including the Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket, and a new Europe-based T20 tournament later this year.

He is expected to represent the Hyderabad Kingsmen in the PSL, marking his first appearance in the tournament. Maxwell said the opportunity fits perfectly into his calendar and allows him to maintain rhythm between tournaments. He also expressed enthusiasm about joining a new franchise from the beginning and contributing to building its identity.

Still Plenty to Offer

Despite modest recent returns with the bat, Maxwell believes his value goes beyond numbers. His experience, versatility, and on-field energy remain assets for both Australia and his franchise teams.

For now, retirement talk appears premature. Maxwell’s focus is clear: stay fit, stay ready, and let performance — not speculation — determine what comes next.
